Former US President Donald Trump has signed an agreement to settle a lawsuit he filed against Meta after he was blocked from using Facebook and Instagram in 2021. The agreement, a preliminary version of which has been made public, stipulates that Meta will pay approximately $25 million.

The move comes at a time when Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is trying to improve relations with Trump, who regained influence after winning the 2024 presidential election. Zuckerberg not only donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration, but also attended the ceremony in person alongside members of the new administration.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Trump and Zuckerberg discussed the deal back in November when Zuckerberg met with Trump at his private club. The development shows a dramatic turnaround in the two men's relationship. Back in the summer, Trump claimed in his book that Zuckerberg was trying to damage him politically, and even hinted at the possibility of his imprisonment.

But the deal is not the only step Meta has taken recently toward moving closer to Trump's political vision. The company recently announced the end of its programs to promote diversity, equality and inclusion, in line with longstanding criticism of these initiatives from conservatives, including Trump. In addition, UFC President Dana White, a close Trump ally, has been added to the company's leadership, and Joel Kaplan, the highest-ranking Republican at Meta, has been promoted to the company's chief policy officer.

$META has also changed its approach to content moderation. The company has ended its relationship with independent fact-checkers in the US and replaced them with a community rating system similar to that used by Platform X (formerly Twitter). Conservatives, including Trump, have long criticised Facebook and Instagram for allegedly censoring right-wing views, and this change caters to them.

The agreement between Trump and the Met is therefore not just a settlement of a legal dispute, but a signal of bigger changes in the tech giant's approach to politics and content regulation. After years of tension, relations between Trump and Zuckerberg have clearly warmed considerably, which could have implications for the future of social media and its role in American politics.
