Apple has struck a deal with Chinese tech giant Alibaba to bring artificial intelligence to the world's largest mobile phone market. The move means Apple will be able to offer its AI services in China, resolving months of uncertainty over the US company's expansion into the Chinese market. The partnership with Alibaba is a strategic move that will allow Apple to overcome regulatory hurdles that have prevented it from fully expanding in China.

Apple $AAPL has decided to partner with China's Alibaba to bring its AI services to the Chinese market, an important step for the US firm that shows its renewed interest in the world's largest mobile market. According to Joe Tsai, Alibaba's chairman, Apple chose this Chinese firm among several other options, including DeepSeek, Baidu, ByteDance and Tencent. Tsai said at the World Government Summit in Dubai that Apple has decided to use $BABA s AI technology to power its phones, but did not provide further details, such as a timeframe for the service's launch or whether Alibaba will be an exclusive partner.

The deal between the two giants comes at a time when Apple is facing stiff competition in the Chinese market. The company has been struggling with declining market share as Chinese competitors like Huawei and Vivo gain momentum. In 2023, Apple lost its position as the smartphone market leader in China for the first time as Huawei overtook Apple with a 16% market share compared to Apple's 15% share. This trend is supported not only by the growing innovation of domestic brands, but also by the patriotic sentiments of some Chinese consumers.

While Apple hopes its AI services will help attract more users in China, analysts warn that AI alone may not be enough to help Apple regain dominance in the Chinese market. Lucas Zhong, an analyst at Canalys, pointed out that Apple faces a challenging competitive environment, especially given Huawei's strong resurgence, and that relying on AI services alone may not be enough to reverse the trend.

Apple, meanwhile, has struggled with regulatory issues in China that have hindered the full expansion of its AI services. The Chinese government requires foreign AI service providers to partner with domestic firms and obtain local regulatory approvals. This new move with Alibaba will help Apple bypass some of these obstacles and better adapt to the Chinese market, where demand for quality AI products is still high.

The deal also marks a positive step for Alibaba, whose shares have risen more than 40% since their January low, a strong signal of investor confidence. Alibaba is already preparing to launch a new version of its Qwen AI model to compete with models from DeepSeek and other Chinese rivals.

Given the growing competition and rapid development of AI technology in China, it will be interesting to see how this new collaboration between Apple and Alibaba develops and what impact it will have on the overall mobile phone and AI market.
